Dublin attorney arrested for allowing inmate to use her cellphone during meeting, police say

She's been an attorney in Georgia since 2017 and has no disciplinary actions on record

LAURENS COUNTY, Ga. — A Dublin attorney was arrested after jail staff witnessed her allowing an inmate to use her cell phone on Wednesday, according to an arrest warrant.

Attorney Courtney Morgan, 32, was taken into custody Thursday morning but she was released on a $7,000 bond, according to the Laurens County Sheriff's Office

The sheriff's office previously told us that the charge covers smuggling various prohibited items, like cell phones and tobacco. However, the statute also prohibits people from giving inmates a phone without jail staff's permission, even if they were not smuggling them.

The warrant says that a sergeant in the sheriff's office witnessed an inmate, Jacqueline Foraker, on the phone while on a visit with Morgan.

While the inmate said that she was on the phone with a rehab facility, however, they say a phone call recorded in the jail suggests she was actually talking with her boyfriend when the sergeant confronted them.

The Laurens County Sheriff's Office is still investigating, and they say more charges could be filed.

The Georgia Bar Association website lists Morgan, who graduated from Washington University in Missouri, as a member in good standing.

She’s been an attorney in Georgia since 2017, and she has no disciplinary actions on record.

While the site lists her as working in the Public Defenders Office in Dublin, they said she hasn’t worked there since last year.

Morgan is currently an attorney with her own law firm, The Morgan Law Firm LLC. She formed it on Oct. 23, 2023.

Morgan says she has "a wide support network" and will be pursuing all legal avenues. She called it a "very traumatic and completely unwarranted event."

Editors Note: a previous version of this article said that Morgan was arrested and charged with smuggling contraband. That is incorrect. She is accused of letting her client use a cell phone during a meeting.
