Man drowned after saving children at Macon Riverwalk

Deputy Coroner Luann Stone said she declared a person dead Friday afternoon

MACON, Ga. — A 33-year-old man drowned at the Macon Riverwalk while attempting to help kids struggling in the water, according to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

They say it happened at around 12:15 p.m. on Friday.

According to the release, the man — later identified as Billy Scott Carter — saw some of the children struggling in the water and the man swam out to help them. It was then that they lost sight of the man, the sheriff's office says.

Just over an hour later at 1:27 p.m., the Macon-Bibb Fire Department was able to locate the victim, who was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Luanne Stone.

Because the man's family has not been notified, the victim's name is behind withheld at this time.

The sheriff's office says that all the children who were swimming were accounted for and unharmed. While the man and the children were not related, the sheriff's office says the parents were aware and they were swimming as a group.

If you have any information, you are asked to call the Bibb County Sheriff's Office at 478-751-7500.
