Mary Persons football forced to forfeit 4 games, pay $1,500 fine due to ineligible transfer, release says

The Bulldogs are now 0-4 and are under a severe warning status for a full season

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — The Mary Persons football team was forced to vacate four of its wins in the 2024 season and must pay a $1,500 fine due to having an ineligible player on the team, according to a Monroe County Schools press release.

The release revealed that, following an investigation from the Monroe County Schools administration, a player, who transferred from another Georgia High School Administration (GHSA) school, was ineligible by GHSA bylaws.

The release added that GHSA officials determined that Mary Persons did not submit the correct paperwork for the transfer student to play and did not properly outline the “academic eligibility” of the currently unnamed player.

Mary Persons was forced to forfeit all four games the ineligible player had played in this season and are now 0-4 as a result.

The football team is also under a severe warning status for one full calendar year.

The Bulldogs, as long as the game goes on uninterrupted, will look for the teams first win of the season against Upson-Lee on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
