Jones County's Mike Chastain becomes winningest coach in program history

The Greyhounds coach clinched the record with a 41-26 win over Veterans in Week 1 of the 2024 season.

JONES COUNTY, Ga. — Jones County has only played five games so far in the 2024 high school football season, but Greyhounds head coach Mike Chastain is already setting records.

With their 41-26 win over Veterans to start the season, Chastain became the winningest head coach in Jones County football history. He’s got an all-time record of 50-19.

The previous record-holder, Bubba Williams, earned 46 wins over 12 seasons. Chastain tied that number in nearly half the number of games.

“The Lord has blessed me with a wide impact and given me a pedestal to be able to do that,” Chastain said. “I just want to be able to help develop young men and impact these guys the best way we possibly can.”

Chastain and the Greyhounds have a 5-1 record this season, and they intend to keep on piling up the wins.

“Football is everything in Jones County, the games are packed out every year,” senior linebacker Daniel Hawk said. “It's been like that for a long time.”

Hawk said the team’s chemistry is the reason Chastain’s bunch keeps winning games.

“The bond this team has,” Hawk said. “We put in a lot of work over the summer. Grew up in rec league playing with each other, so we got to know each other for a long time, just flying around, playing for each other.”

Chastain’s seen that chemistry firsthand, and he said it makes this group a special collection of players.

“Guys just really believe in each other,” Chastain said. “They play hard. We’ve asked them to do something different than we’ve ever done here … we’ve had to adapt to that, and I think our guys have done a phenomenal job answering.”

On the other side of that relationship, senior quarterback Devin Edmonds says he is constantly learning from Chastain.

“He really impacted me,” Edmonds said. “Just learning the game more, teaching me stuff that I didn’t know about the game - just progressed me as a player.”

Fans of the purple and gold are excited about the direction of this program, and with the way Chastain and his players have been winning, they have good reason to be invested.

Jones County’s next chance to add to Chastain’s record will be Friday against Stockbridge.
