'Horrendous accident': 5 dead, 5 injured after a van carrying family to Thanksgiving collides with truck

The van was taking a group of adults and kids to a family gathering for Thanksgiving when it was hit, Colquitt County Coroner C. Verlyn Brock said.

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. — Five people are dead and five people are injured in Colquitt County after a pickup truck collided head-on with a van carrying nine people near Moultrie, according to Georgia State Patrol.

"Over the years, I've seen several things, but this was a horrendous accident," Colquitt County Coroner C. Verlyn Brock said. "There's no question about it. It's a miracle that anyone survived."

The van was carrying a mix of adults and children heading to a family event for Thanksgiving, Brock said.

It happened on GA 111 south of Bay Rockyford Road in Colquitt County, around 129 miles south of Macon and 200 miles from Atlanta.

They say a gray Ram pickup truck traveling east on GA 111 struck a white Ford van traveling west on GA 111 head-on.

Georgia State Patrol says five people were killed immediately on impact and the four other were life-flighted to trauma centers in Thomasville and Tallahassee.

The driver of the Ram truck was also severely injured and was life-flighted out of the scene as well.

No names are being released at this time because they are still working to notify family members.

It was a deadly day on Georgia roads this Thanksgiving with 14 people dying in accidents across the state, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

In Laurens County, two people were killed when their vehicles collided on I-16.

In Hawkinsville in Pulaski County, one person was killed when their car veered off the east shoulder of GA 27 and erupted into flames.
