Houston County school board names sole finalist to succeed superintendent Mark Scott

The county's board of education began its search after current superintendent Mark Scott announced in July that he'll retire after the 2024-2025 school year.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Houston County School District has its next candidate for Superintendent of Schools, and he's a familiar face to the school district.

Richard Rogers was announced as the sole finalist for the position on Wednesday, the district revealed in a statement.

While the board still has to officially vote on hiring Rogers, the announcement of him as the sole finalist paves a clear path forward for his hiring as superintendent.

“When the Houston County Board of Education began the process of searching for the next superintendent, we were looking for someone who could build on the strong reputation of our District and who would continue moving Houston County forward,” said Helen Hughes, Chair of the Houston County Board of Education. “Our board unanimously agreed that Dr. Rogers was the right person to lead the Houston County School District.”

Rogers has served as Deputy Superintendent of the Houston County School District alongside current superintendent Mark Scott since 2021.

Scott announced in late July that he'll retire from the position after the 2024-2025 school year after serving as the superintendent for 10 years. With Scott stepping down after a decade in the position, Rogers is set up to possibly replace him.

Before serving as deputy superintendent, Rogers served as Assistant Superintendent of School Operations and Director of Personnel.

He's been with the Houston County Board of Education since he joined the district in 2004. He taught science and language arts at Bert Rumble and Huntington Middle Schools.

He was an assistant principal at Quail Run Elementary School, but in 2012, Rogers eventually became the principal of Matt Arthur Elementary School.

Also in 2012, Rogers earned his doctorate in Leadership from Valdosta State University. He received a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education and a Master of Education in Middle Grades Education from the University of West Georgia.

The district's Board of Education will vote to confirm his appointment on Tuesday, Nov. 12. If approved, Rogers will begin his term on June 2, 2025.
