This Central Georgia school district is starting its search for a new superintendent

The current superintendent, Mark Scott, has served as superintendent since July 2014.

PERRY, Georgia — The Houston County School District has officially begun its search for a new superintendent, as current Superintendent Mark Scott is set to retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year.

Last week, the Houston County Board of Education voted unanimously to start the application process, which will be open to both internal and external candidates. The board hopes to find someone who will continue Scott’s legacy while also guiding the district into the future.

“We’re looking for someone who can build on the foundation Dr. Scott has created,” said Helen Hughes, chair of the Houston County Board of Education, “And continue moving our district forward.”

The district’s human resources department published the job posting on Friday, with applications closing on Sept. 27. The board will use a scoring rubric based on input from key stakeholders, including students, teachers, and administrators. A survey for the community can be found on the district's website.

“It’s important that we hear from all stakeholders,” Hughes said, “We want to ensure the next leader understands our district’s needs and values.”

The application process will be competitive, and the board is prepared to thoroughly review each candidate’s qualifications and experience. Once the application window closes, board members will use the rubric to narrow the field of applicants and select those who will move forward in the process.

“That’s where the hard work really begins for us,” Hughes said. “We’ll be evaluating each application carefully and making sure that the applicants meet the qualifications and expectations we’ve outlined.”

The board will reconvene after the application process closes to continue the search and eventually make a final decision. The new superintendent is expected to start on June 2, 2025, giving the board several months to find the right person.

“We’re confident that with the right person in place, Houston County Schools will continue to thrive,” she said.

Scott, who announced his retirement in July, has served as superintendent since 2014. Under his leadership, the district has seen significant growth and improvement, and his retirement marks the end of an era for Houston County Schools.

“We’re grateful for all Dr. Scott has done for our district,” Hughes said, “We want to ensure that the next superintendent can carry on that success.”
