Done after a decade: Houston County Board of Education superintendent announces retirement at end of year

Mark Scott, who has been the board's superintendent since June 2014, announced that he'll retire at the end of the year.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Houston County Board of Education superintendent announced his future plans on Wednesday.

Mark Scott, who has been the board's superintendent since June 2014, announced at the Houston County Board of Education Convocation that he'll retire at the end of the year.

The former Northside High School Principal and Milledgeville corrections officer just celebrated his 10th year in the position.

Scott, in his decade in the role as superintendent, had to deal with issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down Houston County schools in early 2020.

He was at the forefront of crafting safety measures and making plans to return back to school later that year. He also was in charge of setting up graduation dates after the ceremonies' statuses were up in the air during the global pandemic.

Recently, he and the rest of the board helped open a new aquatic center for the Houston County community.

Scott began his career as a corrections officer at a Milledgeville prison. He eventually taught heating and air repair classes in a vocational school before getting laid off from the prison.

In 1997, he went on to work with the Baldwin County School System as a teacher, and after 10 years, he moved into administration as an Assistant Principal at Baldwin High School. He then became a Principal at Oak Hill Middle School.

He became a principal at Northside in 2008 and stayed there for three years. He then became the assistant superintendent of human resources with the Board of Education.

In 2014, he took over for Robin Hines, a fellow former Northside Principal. Hines now works with the Georgia High School Association.

A replacement for Scott is currently unknown, but will likely be set closer to Scott's retirement date.

Scott's next plans are also currently unknown.
