Oconee River overflows, floods Dublin homes

Residents of Rex Miller Road are moving their belongings to higher ground.

DUBLIN, Ga. — Some of the water from last week's storms is still causing problems for people in Dublin.

The water in the Oconee River is about 7 feet above flood stage in Laurens County and is seeping into some homes on the east side of town.

Neighbors on Rex Miller Road tied down furniture and watched bags of trash float away on Monday, while others worked to get their precious belongings to higher ground.

When Sue Maddox bought her house on the banks of the Oconee River more than 20 years ago, she wanted a beautiful backyard view of the water, but Monday she found that water in her front yard, and inside of her house.

"We blew some of breakers a while ago, so some of these lights are not coming on. The water is coming up through the bathtub. The bottom part of the bathtub, the drain, into the bathtub," says Maddox.

13WMAZ reporter Chelsea Beimfohr walked through Maddox's home and noted about a foot of standing water in her basement.

Maddox says she's seen this all before, and is used to hoisting her bed up on cinder blocks and moving family photos out of reach from the water.

"You have to wait for it to go down, then you come in and clean it. That's why you have concrete walls and concrete floors," says Maddox. "You come in and clean it with bleach and something to get rid of the mold."

The national weather service predicts that the Oconee River in Dublin will hit about 28 feet Monday before dropping back to normal levels by Friday.
