'Only by the grace of God that no lives were lost' | Man pleads guilty to having AK-47 in Twiggs shooting

Authorities found an AK-47 pistol covered in blood hidden under a kitchen sink, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. During the shooting, they say 17 rounds were fired.

MACON, Ga. — A Central Georgia man pleaded guilty in federal court to having an AK-47 pistol during a shoot-out in Jeffersonville, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia.

They say 30-year-old Jayvon Latrez Anthony pleaded guilty to one count of illegal possession of a firearm by a person under felony indictment on Tuesday.

The case dates back to July 22, 2022, when Anthony and Tre'Vonte Tharpe allegedly got into a shoot-out on Shine Road in Jeffersonville. During the course of the firefight, authorities found 17 rounds from Anthony's assault pistol and one 9mm round fired by Tharpe.

They say Anthony and his mother were both shot, and he was treated at a hospital.

“It’s fortunate no one was killed during this highly volatile shoot-out where the defendant was armed with an assault-style weapon, firing off at least 17 rounds,” U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary said in the press release.

The authorities found the weapon during a search of Anthony's home. They say the AK-47 style pistol and a firearm magazine was hidden under the kitchen sink.

The gun was covered in blood and there was a loaded magazine with a live round in the chamber.

Anthony had previously been convicted in the Bibb County Superior Court of aggravated assault.

“I’m pleased to know that another violent offender is off the streets and is no longer a threat to our community,” Twiggs County Sheriff Darren Mitchum said. “I commend my deputies and investigators for the thorough job they did with this investigation. It was only by the grace of God that no lives were lost due to such a careless act.”

They say he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison which will be followed by a maximum $250,000 fine. He also faces three years of supervised release.
