Houston election board disqualifies Board of Education candidate

Clyde Jackson is a longtime Houston County teacher and coach.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Houston County runoff race scheduled for June is canceled since one of the candidates is disqualified.

He is Clyde Jackson, a candidate for Board of Education Post 7, according to Board of Elections member Henry Childs.

Jackson is a longtime Houston County teacher and coach.

His wife is also a veteran educator and principal.

State law says a school administrator or someone married to an administrator can't serve on the school board.

While Jackson's website says his wife is retired, Childs says the legal experts at the Board of Elections interpreted the code and said, Mrs. Jackson is considered an administrator.

According to a spokesperson for the Houston County Board of Education, Traci Jackson works for the district part-time and makes $68,208 as a coordinator for district and school effectiveness.

Because she is a retired educator, she has limitations on the amount of work she can do. The district calls it a 49% role. But if she were full-time, she would make $142,000.

If Tuesday's vote stands, Jackson's opponent, Angel Brown takes the Post 7 seat without a runoff.

13WMAZ spoke to Jackson on Wednesday morning. He said he disagreed with the board's vote.
