Atlanta water crisis Day 6: Mayor says major repairs completed, boil water advisory remains | Latest updates

11Alive is continuing to keep track of water main break updates and venue closures throughout the city of Atlanta.

Atlanta residents are hours away from having access to water again after five days due to Friday's water main breaks, which have left thousands under a boil water advisory. 

According to the city on Tuesday, The estimated timeline for the water system to return to normal is between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The boil advisory is still in effect. 

For a full detailed map of neighborhoods and streets affected, click here. Over the weekend, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens declared the City under a state of emergency.

The City of Atlanta Watershed Management announced Monday that the  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would be here Tuesday to assist with the crisis. 

"They will help us develop a plan to assess and evaluate our aging infrastructure," Dickens said. 

Dickens promised updates every two hours regarding the progress of repairs until all water mains were completely fixed on Saturday. 11Alive is tracking those updates below and building closures around the city.

Latest water main break updates

Wednesday, June 5 

8:05 p.m. | The DWM will be conducting a test shutdown of a 30-inch main as part of its evaluation of the water system. It will be at the intersection of MLK Jr. Dr. and Bakers Ferry Rd on Thursday between midnight and 4 a.m. DWM said that customers from Bolton Road to Fairburn Road and the surrounding area may experience an interruption of water service while the test shutdown is being conducted. 

4 p.m. | A boil water advisory is still in effect for a large part of central Atlanta. Officials said it would take about 18 hours for the State's Environmental Protection Division to determine if the boil water advisory could be lifted. 11Alive's Grace King and 11Alive's Joe Ripley have the latest update: 

12:52 p.m. | "We are pleased to announce that water services have been fully restored across the city. We understand the significant inconvenience and hardships caused by this unexpected disruption, and we sincerely apologize to all affected residents," City of Atlanta officials said in an update on social media. 

11:30 a.m. | After nearly six days of water outages and disruptions, city leaders said repair work is complete and water has been restored across Atlanta. Now, the focus is on efforts to lift a boil water advisory that is still in effect. 11Alive's Rarione Maniece breaks down the next steps leaders plan to take: 

9:37 a.m. | Atlanta Watershed officials said there is an interruption of water service near 2323 Piedmont Avenue NE, which is near Little Rey. Crews turned off a 12-inch main to make the emergency pairs. The outage is affecting one apartment complex and one hydrant. 

9:30 a.m.  | Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the watershed department updated the public on Wednesday after repairs were completed and water was restored to the area. Officials said that in addition to the initial repairs, they're looking at other solutions for the future when it comes to detecting leaks. The department said they installed an AI device that will notify them when pipes need repairs. 

FEMA Region 4 plans to send a resiliency expert to meet with the city and go over long-term solutions. Officials said it would take about 18 hours for the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to determine if the boil water advisory can be lifted. 

The area affected on Peachtree Street will remain closed while crews finish cleaning up.

8:04 a.m.  | Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is expected to give an update regarding repairs at 9:30 a.m. 

7:34 a.m.  | A press release from the city announced that water has been restored to the Midtown area. The city of Atlanta stated that the repairs on the water main break at the intersection of West Peachtree Street and 11th Street have been completed. Residents and businesses are asked to continue to abide by the boil water advisory. 

"The system is slowly being brought back online to allow system pressures to rebuild," the city said in part. 

Georgia Environmental Protection Division will determine if the boil water advisory can be lifted once the watershed department follows its flushing protocols for the water system as a precautionary measure and has tested the affected zones to confirm that the public water in the system is safe for all purposes. 

6:45 a.m. | The city's X, formerly known as a Twitter page, posted that crews are still working to restore water pressure to normal.

4:49 a.m. | Reporter Rarione Maniece gives the latest updates on11Alive morning news

4 a.m.      | Water is expected to be back on for residents between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the city, on Tuesday. The boil advisory is still in effect until the state's Environmental Protection Division determines it can be lifted.

Tuesday, June 4

11:43 p.m. | 11Alive's Angelina Salcedo describes how DeKalb County is prioritizing improving its water system as work continues in Atlanta after the water crisis. 

10:00 p.m. | Atlanta Public Schools said that summer schools and programs will remain closed on Wednesday at Midtown High School, Howard Middle School, Mary Lin Elementary School, Hope-Hill Elementary School, Whitefoord Inc. and Coan Middle School. 

8:46 p.m. | The City of Atlanta released an update about the water system issues. Repairs remain ongoing at West Peachtree St. and 11th St. A 30-inch pipe was successfully lowered into the hold and completed steps to restore water service. It turned on smaller valves on 11th St as well. Water is on at the Marriott Residence Inn and Eleventh Street Pub. 

The estimated timeline for the water system to return to normal is between 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday. The boil advisory is still in effect. 

The water main break repair is also complete at Joseph E. Boone Blvd and J.P. Brawley Dr. 

7:01 p.m. | Atlanta City Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari took to social media to give an update about the water situation. She said the main at 11th St. is actively being replaced. Once that is complete, the system will need to be pressurized before the water can be tested for safety. 

For an accurate reading, the water from the newly pressurized line must be incubated for 18 hours. After this period, the city will share its test results with the state's Environmental Protection Division, which will then determine if the boil water advisory can be lifted. 

2:30 p.m. | Crews are investigating a potential water main break at Martin Luther King Dr & Bakers Ferry Rd SW. Officials said there could be a temporary disruption of water service for residents and businesses in the area.

2:12 p.m. |  Crews are responding to an emergency water repair at Clayton Rd NE and Armour Dr NE. Water service has temporarily been disrupted for one hydrant in the area.  

1 p.m. | The City of Atlanta’s Department of Transportation (ATL DOT) sent a reminder about a road closure on a portion of West Peachtree Street NE as the Department of Watershed Management (DWM) crews complete a water main repair at the corner of 11th Street NE and West Peachtree Street NE. 

Officials said West Peachtree Street NE is still closed from north of 10th Street NE to 12th Street NE. 

ATL DOT wants to remind drivers and pedestrians that this portion of the road will remain closed until the repair is complete. Officials advise bikers and pedestrians to stay clear of the construction area between 10th Street NE and 12th Street NE.
