One person is in custody and a trooper is hospitalized after a chase and crash in Telfair County, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).

They say it happened on Saturday when a trooper from Post 16 Hazlehurst attempted to stop a silver Honda Accord on 4th and Poplar Street in Telfair County.

The driver of the Honda refused to stop and a chase began. The pursuing trooper lost the Honda on Willow Creek Lane while other troopers were responding to assist.

The driver of the Honda was traveling east on Willow Creek Lane when they failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of GA 30 and hit a trooper's patrol car on the driver's side. The trooper was traveling north at the intersection, GSP says.

After impact, the trooper's car hit a parked car and a utility pole.  GSP says debris from the trooper's car also hit other parked cars and bystanders in the area.

The driver of the Honda Accord was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

The trooper involved in the crash was flown by Air Evac to Atrium Health Navicent in Macon with serious injuries, GSP says.
