Wrong-way driver on I-75 in Monroe County killed in fiery wreck, all lanes since reopened

GDOT's 511 website shows all lanes of I-75 South were shut down because of the crash and one lane of I-75 North was closed due to a "smoke hazard."

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — A wrong-way driver on I-75 is dead after a fiery wreck in Monroe County, and according to the Georgia Department of Transportation, multiple lanes of I-75 South were closed as a result of it.

According to the site, they say that the crash happened Monday at around 3:17 p.m.

Christina Bramlett with Monroe County Emergency Services says it started on the northbound lanes near the rest area, but the crash ended in the southbound lanes of the highway near the Rumble Road exit.

The crash involved two other cars who attempted to get out of the way of the driver heading the wrong way, Bramlett said. The Monroe County Sheriff's says the driver struck the side of a semi-truck.

She says the wrong way driver then crashed into the median and their car caught on fire. They were killed during the crash, Bramlett says.

As of 5:10 p.m., two of four southbound lanes were reopened, and as of 8 p.m., all lanes were flowing, according to GDOT. Earlier, one lane in the northbound direction was closed due to a "smoke hazard," but it was reopened early into the evening.
