Back to business | Central Georgia congressmen discuss future plans after 2024 re-election

Sanford Bishop (D) and Austin Scott (R) say they hope to keep working together across the aisle in 2025.

MACON, Ga. — Thursday, the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce held its Macon and Eggs breakfast program at Wesleyan College.

Sanford Bishop, 2nd district congressman, and Austin Scott of the 8th congressional district sat down together as co-panelist to discuss rounds of topics including federal policy, economic growth, national defense and agriculture.

Scott and Bishop said while ending their current terms, they're focused on laying the ground work for 2025.

"I appreciate the opportunity to go back and serve," Scott said. "We've obviously got a lot of work to do, we've got to get the border secure. We got to get the cost of energy down. We're very concerned about inflation."

Bishop also talked about his goals.

"Invest in our communities, invest in our schools to expand broadband, to build roads, to improve housing, boost our local economy, to strengthen our national security, to support our law enforcement," Bishop said.

Bishop is a Democrat; Scott is a Republican, and both congressmen tell 13WMAZ they're grateful for an extension in office. Though they're on different sides of the political aisle, both said some projects are best supported by bipartisan efforts.

"We have been able to capture the wave in terms of increasing jobs in this 21st century economy and to be able to be in Congress to allocate resources to make those investments," Bishop said.

One example referenced in Thursday's program: the push to turn Macon's Ocmulgee mounds historic site into a national park and preserve.

Scott says it would create more jobs and boost tourism in Central Georgia, adding as an advocate for military installment, he says he's constantly working to support Robins Air Force Base.

"The missions at Robins Air Force Base, obviously, Jars is standing down, but at the same time, we're going to have the ABMS, the advance battle management system that's going to be continuing to grow," Scott said.

Both spoke on former President Donald Trump's return to the White House.

"I am also very happy that it's not a one or a two vote electoral college issue as was being discussed up to and until the election, I appreciate Vice President Harris coming out and saying she wants a peaceful transfer of power," Scott said.

Bishop said though he was hoping to see a Harris-Walz administration, his experience prepares him to work with and under any leadership.

"My job as a member of Congress is to work with whomever is in power, whomever is in the White House, or whoever my colleagues are in Congress," Bishop said.

Both congressman also addressed relief for farmers affected by Hurricane Helene and national defense.
