MACON, Ga. — U.S. House Rep. Sanford Bishop (D-Columbus) warded off a challenge from Wayne Johnson, securing another term in office, the Associated Press calls.

Bishop was first elected to his seat in 1993.

Here’s a look at how Georgia’s 2nd House District voted in the 2024 election.

Results:

What does the winner stand for?

According to Bishop’s website, the representative is focused on bolstering the economic impact of agriculture, pointing to his role as a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture.

He also highlights his work on tax relief, defense, education and the environment.

Who’s included in Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District?

The congressional district encompasses a chunk of the western parts of Central and South Georgia. The district includes parts of Macon and Warner Robins at its northernmost tip and then extends all the way to the Alabama state line at its west. The district’s southernmost point is at the Florida State line.

Hard-fought Republican primary

The race for the Republican nomination took two rounds after neither of the candidates secured over 50% of the vote.

The original race included: Johnson, Chuck Hand, Michael Nixon and Regina Liparto.

Originally, Johnson received 44.6% of the vote to Hand’s 32% in the May 21 primary.

Liparto and Nixon were eliminated in the first round, sending Hand and Johnson to the runoff.

In the runoff, Johnson secured 65.8% of the vote to Hand’s 24.2%.

The primary garnered significant attention due to Hand pleading guilty to storming the U.S. Capital and hand walking off the stage during the debate between Johnson and Hand.
