Control of Congress: Rep. Austin Scott wards off challenger to win reelection, AP calls

The Associated Press called the race at 8:07 p.m. as results rolled in.

MACON, Ga. — Georgia Rep. Austin Scott may have lost two bids for the speaker of the house back in October 2023, but on election day, Scott easily secured another term as a member of Georgia’s delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives. 

The Associated Press called the race at 8:07 p.m. as results rolled in, indicating that there is mathematically no way for  Scott's challenger Rev. Darrius Butler to win.

The long-time republican district covers part of Central Georgia and extends all the way down to the Florida-Georgia line near Valdosta.

Scott, a Republican who hails from Tifton, was challenged by Butler from Hawkinsville in Pulaski County. That’s in the southern portion of Central Georgia.  

Scott first rose to power after ousting Macon Democrat Rep. Jim Marshall in 2010, flipping the district Republican. Since then, he has served as the representative for the 8th District now for nearly

Scott, who has a background in insurance, vied unsuccessfully to replace House Speaker Kevin McCarthy back in October 2023, who was ousted by the far-right wing of the Republican party due to brokering a bipartisan funding deal to avert a government shutdown. 

Scott put his name into the ring twice during the Republican speakership crisis, the period when the House of Representatives was without a speaker for three weeks. 

His bid thrust new attention on the congressman with little name recognition outside the start of Georgia, but both efforts to replace McCarthy failed. 

After multiple rounds of votes, the Republican caucus was ultimately able to elect Louisana Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker of the house.
