JONES COUNTY, Ga. — A crash at the intersection of Gray Highway and Homer Roberts Road left two people dead Tuesday, Deputy Jones County Coroner Stacy Gardner confirmed to 13WMAZ.
The Jones County Sheriff's Office says the accident happened at around 5:55 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Gray Highway. The crash was near the Dollar General where Homer Roberts Road and Graham Road intersects with the highway.
Gardner identified the victims as Rhonda Ramirez, 59, and Hazel Wallace, 75. The mother and daughter pair are from Wilcox County.
According to Gardner, Ramirez and Wallace were in a blue Kia Rio and they were attempting to turn off of Homer Roberts Road and onto Gray Highway en route to Macon.
But she says they pulled in front of a log truck, which slammed right into them.
Right after the crash, both lanes were blocked by the wreckage, but eventually, the Jones County Sheriff's Office would get the crash into the median.
After that, the crash shut down one lane in the northbound direction and one lane in the southbound direction. Since Gray Highway is a four-lane highway, one lane was open in both directions for traffic to keep flowing.
It took until 8:50 p.m. for all lanes to fully reopen, the sheriff's office said.
