BONAIRE, Ga. — People show love in all sorts of ways.
One man in Bonaire cleared his property to put up a symbol that you can't help but notice. He says he was called to do it by a higher power.
Mathew Roquemore doesn't mind his neighbors unusual yard sculpture. "I think it's a really cool addition to the neighborhood. He's definitely spent a lot of time on it, put a lot of effort into it as well," he said.
Megan Waite agrees. "We love it -- it's always fun to go by and look at it, and my kids really get a kick out of it," she said.
Well, not everyone's yard looks like Ronnie Washington's.
"When I come out here and work on the heart when the sun comes up and when the sun comes down," Washington said.
He's kept that schedule for about a year now, and this is what he has to show for it -- a large concrete heart that sits front and center. You can even see it from around the corner.
"Show the people the love and you can see the love in the flowers, and people come by and say, 'Mr. Washington, your flowers are very happy,' and I say, 'I know, because Jesus is talking to y'all. It's all for y'all -- it ain't about me,'" Washington said with a smile.
Part of the credit for this big heart goes to Ronnie's older sister Jerry. Back in 2015, she asked Ronnie to build her a heart in her front yard. Ronnie set to work and got it done. Jerry passed in 2016, and Ronnie said, "Why not build a heart in my front yard?"
"I was thanking God for showing me what to do the second time around," Washington said.
It wasn't always easy sometimes Ronnie had to do the work from an electric wheelchair.
"I was in a bad accident 10 years ago. A truck plowed me down from the back," he recalled.
Ronnie's lost three sisters recently.
He says he thinks a lot about them when he sees the heart, but feels this is a mission from God.
"I'm going to put some tables out here, and if you want a soda, you want to talk about the Lord, that's what I'm here for, you know? It makes me feel good -- it gives me chill bumps," he said.
Ronnie says he's still got a long way to go on the project.
He wants to paint the heart purple because he says that is one of God's favorite colors.
He also wants to put in a kneeling bench in case people want to pray.
