'They could've killed my child': Macon mom fears daughter's safety after Northeast High attack

Bibb County Schools spokeswoman Stephanie Hartley says two students were the target of a fight by several other students during a class change on Wednesday.

MACON, Ga. — A Macon mom is scared for her child's safety after she was attacked by several students in the hallway of Northeast High School.

"It had over 7,000 views in two or three hours. They were constantly beating my daughter," says Tasha Williams.

Williams recalls seeing a graphic video of her daughter being brutally attacked in the hallway at Northeast High school.

She says, "She had a shoe print still on her forehead, she had a facial contusion, she had a chest cavity contusion, and a mild concussion."

Bibb County Schools spokeswoman Stephanie Hartley says two students were the target of a fight by several other students during a class change on Wednesday.

Williams says after watching the video, "Nobody stopped the fight, it just eventually stopped, but nobody stopped the fight."

Hartley says the fight allegedly started when a male student threatened to slap a female student on Tuesday.

The school sat the students down to resolve the issue. The next day, other students started a fight with Williams daughter and her friend.

Hartley gave a full statement to 13WMAZ about the incident:

Yesterday at Northeast, a male student and his female companion were the target of a fight by several other students during the transition from third lunch back to class. The fight stemmed from an event the day before (Tuesday) when the male allegedly threatened a different female student with slapping her. Administration was made aware of the threat and sat the two students down as part of the school’s use of reformative justice practices for an intervention circle. The two students worked out their issues, but others were not aware they had resolved those issues. Those other students then started the fight with the male and his female companion yesterday following lunch. Seven students were charged with aggravated battery and are also facing disciplinary actions as a result. I cannot discuss discipline because of FERPA. Principal Steven Jones says school is back to normal operations today and everything is running smoothly.

Now, Williams is questioning school security. "Where was the staff, where was the campus police?" Worried about her daughter's safety, she said, "They could've killed my child. I send her to school one way and she is coming back another."

Hartley says seven students were charged with aggravated battery and disciplinary action by the school.

She says, "We've got to protect our kids. We've got to set an example, because we let them, we pat them on the hand, they're going to go out and do it again."

Barbara Callaway told 13WMAZ by phone that her son was the other student attacked. She says the school tribunal has dealt with this dispute three times, and always declines to do anything. She says, "This could've been avoided."

We asked Hartley about these comments, and she said the school can't discuss specific disciplinary actions because of school policy.

The school system went on to say, "The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority and we take all incidents seriously."
