'They give us so much': Warner Robins recycles Christmas trees

Staff with Keep Warner Robins Beautiful says the mulch will be re-purposed for parks and fish habitat.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Some folks in Houston County said goodbye to their Christmas trees, but those trees didn't go to a landfill.

On Saturday morning, Rogie Roberson volunteered to help recycle trees at the Warner Robins Christmas Tree Round-Up.

"It's a way to show to the community that we do care about our community and the environment, instead of these trees winding up in the landfill," Roberson said.

He says they get chipped into mulch and then donated to places like the Wellston Park for dogs.

Debra Jones with Keep Warner Robins Beautiful says other donations will be deposited in area lakes and streams to improve the fish habitat.

"Trees are so important to us. They give us so much more back. We get oxygen. We get wood by-products. We get habitat animals," Jones said.

Each person who donated a tree received Red Maple and Crepe Myrtle seedlings to plant at their homes.

Roman Jones with Keep Warner Robins Beautiful says every tree planted helps replenish the live trees that were cut down for the holidays.

"It benefits everyone when we all do our part," Roman said.

Roberson says it's a tradition he looks forward to every year.

"Looking forward to coming out and seeing the citizens, the camaraderie with everybody," Roberson said.

Staff with Keep Warner Robins Beautiful say they round up more than three tons worth of mulch each year.
