MACON, Ga. — On Saturday people in Bibb County packed up their Christmas trees and took them to be recycled for the 39th annual Bring One for the Chipper event on Riverside Drive.
Volunteers from a local boy scout troop, public works, and schools all pitched in. They helped carry the trees, shred them, bag the remains for mulch, and hand out saplings.
Anyone who stopped by could grab a free tree sapling and bag of mulch in exchange for their Christmas tree.
Keep Macon Beautiful Commission President Pamela Carswell says this event gives trees a purpose beyond just lighting up our homes during the holidays.
"The ultimate goal is to keep the trees out of the landfill and to recycle them. To put them back in the flower beds and put them back as mulch to go in the earth," Carswell said.
Organizers say they expected about 1,200 tress to be recycled by the time they closed up shop at 1 p.m.
