'We must stand together': Macon church preaches importance of being an ally to the LGBTQ+ community

Reverend Amanda Schuber came out at 20-years-old. Now, she uses her personal journey to preach on equality.

MACON, Ga. — In June, millions nationwide are celebrating and commemorating the LGBTQ+ community.

However, finding a safe haven remains challenging for some.

From families who aren't accepting to communities that spread hate, the obstacles are significant.

Inside the High Street Unitarian Universalist Church, faith and inclusivity are paramount, as Reverend Amanda Schuber learned decades ago when she came out as a lesbian at 20.

Her personal journey is now a part of her weekly sermons, thanks to what she calls an ally or co-conspirator.

"People who center the most marginalized are crucial in the charge for equality," Schuber said.

Reverend Sara Pugh-Montgomery echoes this sentiment, emphasizing allyship's importance for LGBTQ+ individuals.

"I've seen the harm of exclusion firsthand," Pugh-Montgomery said.

She believes that keeping an open mind and showing respect are essential in fostering understanding, even for her children.

While Pride Month festivities unfold, both reverends note that achieving equality remains a daily struggle for LGBTQ+ communities.

Addressing implicit biases, they said, could significantly improve inclusivity.

Ultimately, their message is one of empathy and respect, emphasizing our shared humanity.

"We must stand together in this fight across all identities," Schuber said.
