MACON, Ga. — Pride Month begins on June 1!
Pride Month is dedicated to celebrating members of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests in 1969.
There are several ways to be proud of who you are and of those in your community this Pride Month across Central Georgia.
When: June 8 from 9 a.m.-noon
Where: Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park
Macon Pride and Southern Queer Folks Hike are partnering for this event.
Pride In Our Parks "is an initiative focused on community and park clean-up, while also aiming to connect people from the LGBTQs+ community with the great outdoors. Parks serve various essential functions in our communities, including providing a space for freedom of expression. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is proud to support this gathering, fostering community connection and environmental stewardship within our local community."
There are two citizen science opportunities you can choose from: Dragon Fly Collection (for the Dragon Fly Mercury Project) and INaturalist Plant Identification.
If you choose to volunteer, keep in mind these are outdoor events and can be physically strenuous for some. Closed-toed shoes, pants and water are required to volunteer. Bug spray is also recommended. Registration is required and free for both events.
Dragon Fly larvae are collected for the Dragon Fly Mercury Project each year from Walnut Creek which runs through the park. This activity includes traversing wooded areas, wading through water, standing and stooping. Bring your own waders (if you have them).
You can also help collect info for iNaturalist, which is a database that helps people identify plants and animals and learn about the natural world. Users can collect plant data by taking and uploading photos of plants, along with information about the time and place.
Any child 10 and under participating in this opportunity requires a personal flotation device and constant parental supervision.
You can sign up here.
