MACON, Ga. — The Girls Dig Deeper Initiative hosted their third session since their founding at the Middle Georgia Regional Library on Saturday.
The group, which was founded in March, offers leadership development programs for teenage girls in the Central Georgia area.
They look to help girls overcome “barriers,” like childhood poverty, chronic absenteeism, poor academic achievement, disability, adverse childhood experiences and community violence.
The initiative received a $15,500 grant from the Macon Violence Prevention in two different rounds. In the first round, they received $5,500. In the second round, they received the remaining $10,000.
“The girls were engaged and given the opportunity to share their experiences, and how they handle everyday situations based on the topic of the lessons,” founder and executive director Najiva Timothee said of earlier meetings. “They also learned and understood the benefit and the concept that choice is a gift they have.”
The third session was on self-discipline and was available for any teenage girl within the ages of 13-17. It ran from 2 to 3 p.m.
There were three girls in attendance. The full list of topics is as follows.
Self discipline
Self control
Current and future goals
Goal setting
Motivation
Girls shared experience
Forming habits
Benefits of self control
Controlling thoughts
Self discipline thinking
Thinking positive
Timothee hopes to continue the program going and continue to help teenage girls in the Macon community.
"It's fun and engaging and it gives the girls a chance to learn more about being a leader and applying the values and the skills that they need to be effective," she said. "Whether it's in school, whether it's in their communities or whether it's in their professional life as they get older."
