Wheeler County residents trying to recover after massive damage caused by Hurricane Helene

The majority of the county has been without power since Thursday night, and water mains have been disrupted too.

WHEELER COUNTY, Ga. — The effects of Hurricane Helene are still lingering in some counties.

In Wheeler County, residents have been without power since Thursday night, and water lines are not working throughout the county.

The damage in Wheeler has been like nothing they’ve ever seen, according to Steve Adams, the county EMA director.

"It was unrecognizable," said Rilyn Rodgers, a Wheeler County resident. "It did not look like the same property. It didn't look like the place I was raised."

Rodgers woke up to find destruction throughout the yard, and a devastated county.

She says it was a nightmare walking outside and seeing things in disrepair.

"Trees that I used to climb on, a trampoline that I used to jump on, my playhouse from my childhood - all of it was destroyed it was definitely heartbreaking," she says.

Rodgers said it could have been worse, despite the pain she felt.

She says she knows people who have trees on their homes and her family knew the two people who died in a mobile home early Friday.

Adams said he got a page Friday morning and headed to the site. He says he saw the mobile home and found the two victims.

"All over a 250-acre field, so we didn't know what we had, but we did find two DOAs in the process," he says.

Adams says he is just trying to get Wheeler County back on its feet.

He says they're still waiting for their power and water to come back, and would take any help they can get.

"Prayers are number one and two is anything you can bring, think about getting to the county.  Red Cross is supposed to be coming to get some food. Maybe somebody in neighboring county could bring something to the Alamo.

Although Rodgers lost her playground and trampoline, she sees how blessed she is and says she wants to help others. That is why she created the Emergency Support Facebook page for Wheeler County.

"I was born and raised here and so everyone who has invested in me and helped shape me into the person i am today," she said. "I have a huge heart for them and for investing and turning back into my community."

If you are interested in helping you can bring water or food to the Civic Center in Alamo.
