MACON, Ga. — After a cold front came through Saturday morning, strong winds are rocking Central Georgia through the day.
These winds are directly behind a line of storms that posed a severe weather risk overnight Friday into Saturday. There was a tornado watch in southern areas but no warnings were issued through the overnight hours.
The 13WMAZ weather team began watching the wind reports in real-time and monitored power outages in the area. Reports of power outages began around 4 a.m. and were sporadic through the morning in places such as Lizella, north Macon, and Roberta, among many others.
Here are some of the highest recorded gusts from Central Georgia at official observing sites:
- Macon (Middle Georgia Regional Airport) - 54 mph, 4:50 a.m.
- Perry (I-75 at US 341, Exit 136) - 53 mph, 5:00 a.m.
- Perry (Perry-Houston County Airport) - 49 mph, 4:55 a.m.
- Warner Robins (Robins Air Force Base) - 48 mph, 5:05 a.m.
- Forsyth (I-75 weigh station) - 46 mph, 4:50 a.m.
- Milledgeville (Baldwin County Airport) - 46 mph, 5:17 a.m.
- Cochran (Cochran Airport) - 44 mph, 5:35 a.m.
- Cordele (I-75 at US 280, Exit 101) - 44 mph, 5:20 a.m.
- Sandersville (Kaolin Field Airport) - 41 mph, 9:35 a.m.
- Dublin (CWOP site) - 40 mph, 8:55 a.m.
- Eastman (Heart of Georgia Regional Airport) - 37 mph, 9:35 a.m.
The wind in Perry even caused damage to booths set-up for the Peaches to Beaches event.
A Wind Advisory is in effect area wide until 7 p.m. Saturday night.
