MACON, Ga. — NOAA forecasters at the Climate Prediction Center have updated the official 2021 hurricane season forecast, reaffirming the likelihood for an above average season.

The early August update is calling for 15-21 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes. This translates to a 65% chance of an above-average hurricane season.

While the forecast is for an active hurricane season, the 2021 season is not expected to be as severe as the 2020 hurricane season.

Last year, there were 30 named storms, 14 hurricanes, and 7 major hurricanes in the Atlantic basin.

All storms that have already occurred this year are included in the forecast. So far in 2021, the Atlantic basin has experienced four tropical storms and one hurricane.

Central Georgia has felt the effects from three tropical systems this year: Claudette, Danny, and Elsa.

Hurricane season lasts until November 30.
