Warner Robins church housing homeless community during Hurricane Helene

No Limit Baptist Church will house people starting at 6 p.m. Thursday. They are located at 1352 Radio Loop.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Car lines stretched down South Pleasant Hill Road in Warner Robins Thursday, as folks waited hours to get sand bags from the city Public Works Department.

Cars could get up to 10 free bags to protect their homes and businesses through the overnight storm.

"Coming from Miami, Florida, I've experienced a few hurricanes," Pastor Vince Harrington said.

That's one reason why Harrington is helping to look out for those who don't have anywhere to place sandbags.

"To be outside and not have shelter is not where you want to be in a hurricane," Harrington said.

No Limit Baptist Church will house homeless people through the night of Thursday, Sept. 26. This winter, they partnered with the city of Warner Robins to turn their church into a warming shelter.

"The need didn't stop because the seasons change, the need is still still there," Harrington said.

Typically they house people in their outdoor trailers, but for safety reasons they're housing everyone in their sanctuary.

"We still have this strong structure of a sanctuary and using that and using our other facilities, we can make a difference," Harrington said.

Homeless Liaison Brian Wise is busing people through the rain to the church.

"We got several people in this community stepping up to volunteer to help us too," Wise said.

Throughout the day, some people dropped off donations. The church also plans to provide snacks and a small meal.

Right now their biggest focus is getting through the night.

"Whatever comes in the morning, we'll just go from there and see how bad it is the situation is outside," Wise said.

As for Thursday, the unhoused can use the sanctuary as a sandbag, protecting them from the storm flooding.

"The Bible says the poor should be with us always, and so we always want to go out and do meet the need and that's what we've been trying to do," Harrington said.

Wise says they don't plan to turn anyone away.

This Saturday the church also plans their monthly outreach event where they give food, clothing, and other resources to the unhoused.

No Limit Baptist Church is at 1352 Radio Loop in Warner Robins.
