Atlanta Motor Speedway is helping people fleeing Hurricane Milton

As Hurricane Milton barrels towards Florida, the Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering a place to seek shelter for those in the line of the storm.

People fleeing from Hurricane Milton in Florida can seek shelter at the Atlanta Motor Speedway campgrounds, the speedway announced in a press release on Monday.

They say the Speedway and Henry County Emergency Management Agency are offering evacuees free places to camp. They're offering spots for RVs at their "Legends Premium Campground" and spots to pitch a tent at their "Legends Tent Campgrounds."

Along with a place to wait out the storm — which is projected to hit Florida as a major hurricane — the speedway also offers access to the campground's shower house as well.

"While our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected by Hurricane Helene, we’re committed to helping when storms affect communities in the southeast whenever we can,” AMS Executive Vice President Brandon Hutchison said in a statement. “We have hundreds of acres of campgrounds and opening up our facility is an easy choice to make. If you’re in Milton’s path and looking for a place to stay, we’re here for you.”

The Atlanta Motor Speedway is located in Henry County, roughly an hour outside of Macon.

They say they've helped people seek refuge multiple times during hurricane season.

They opened their campgrounds in 2017, 2018, 2019 and most recently, when Hurricane Idalia occurred in 2023.

They say storm evacuees can enter from Georgia Highway 20 and Lower Woolsey Road at entrance H.

Then, they'll turn onto the speedway's perimeter road until they arrive at the Legends Premium Campground for RV campers and Legends Tent Campground for pop-up tent camping.

The motorspeed way also offers some camp spaces with water, power and sewer hook-ups. While not complimentary, the speedway says the limited spots will "be available for a nominal fee of $35 per night."
