American Red Cross setting up shelters across Central Georgia | When, where, and what you need to know

The American Red Cross said people who want to help or need help can call their number 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-733-2767.

SOPERTON, Ga. — The American Red Cross has 10 shelters set up across the state of Georgia.

Anyone affected by Helene can go stay overnight or get resources they need. The list of locations can be found in the American Red Cross Emergency app.

The lights still haven't come back on for most people in Treutlen County.

"They told us the power was going to be on yesterday night,” Ronald Oden said. “Well, it was down the street, the city stuff, but the residential is still down."

The American Red Cross shelter at the Old Treutlen High School is providing people with a place with power, food and cots to sleep. Shelter Supervisor Dena McMillian said people do not need any documents or proof of home damage to be there.

"We're just about getting you shelter here and making you comfortable, and feel comfortable in this dire need when you're a disaster because it's traumatic for people," she said.

They said they'll be open around the clock to serve people. Every person that comes to the shelter gets a comfort kit with toiletries to use inside of their shower van.

Ronald Oden said being without power for days has been a struggle.

"We lost about $400 worth of groceries we had just bought," he said.

He came out today in search of ready-to-eat meals and ice for his medicine.

"That's another issue for the power, I'm a diabetic, which means I have to keep my insulin cold, which means I have to find ice, which is why I was heading over here," he said.

McMillian said she is grateful for the chance to help the community.

"It just fulfills your heart,” she said. “There's nothing like it. Then feeling the gratitude and the thankfulness from the residents that are actually in need. 80% of this county still does not have electricity. So, it's a problem. And so, we're here for them."

McMillian said there are 60 beds inside the shelter with room to set up more. The American Red Cross said people who want to help or need help can call their number 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-733-2767. They also have information on their website.
