MACON, Ga. — The American Red Cross said they have 1,200 volunteers working across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee to provide resources after Helene.
One of their headquarters is in Macon.
Trucks are being loaded up with comfort kits, cleaning kits and food. Then, volunteers drive them to one of the communities that need them.
Kevin West is the logistics transportation supervisor. He said it's been a busy six days.
"I make sure that they have a vehicle or a truck or whatever vehicles they need to get whatever supplies to the people that were struck in this disaster," West said.
Robert Williams has been volunteering with the American Red Cross for 26 years.
"I feel satisfied that I'm able to go out and assist those who have been affected by all these awful storms and all," he said.
Volunteer Mary Simkins said as of today they've served meals in 29 counties and provided just over 3,000 overnight stays in shelters. She said she loves being part of this humanitarian effort.
"People are giving what they can and they're doing what they can,” she said. “I do want to highlight that with the interruption of services and utilities, checking on your neighbor is vitally important. So, if you're able to leave your home safely and make sure that your neighbor is all right, that is the stage of this response that we're in right now."
Officials at this American Red Cross headquarters tell me they have 10 overnight shelters open in Georgia. Those are open to anyone affected by Helene and you can find the locations on the red cross emergency app.
The American Red Cross said people who want to help or need help can text "HELENE" to 90999 or to 1-800-REDCROSS. There is also information on their website.
