JONES COUNTY, Ga. — University of Georgia and Houston County native Jake Fromm announced he's entering into the National Football League draft. Fromm told the world he'd no longer be playing between the hedges through a post on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
"This process and decision has been unbelievably difficult, but through much prayer and counsel, I have decided that it is time for me to take on the next challenge in my life and pursue my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL," he wrote.
Former position coach Mike Chastain says he worked with the young and eager Fromm in Houston County from eighth grade to his junior year before leaving to coach in Jones County.
"Back then, he was very mature. He's just a hard worker and a great guy to be around," said Chastain.
He says he knows the decision to leave UGA was a difficult one.
"There's a lot of things he had to weigh in to see what's best for him and his family," said Chastain.
Fromm's accomplishments so far are reasons why Chastain says he's an inspiration to aspiring quarterbacks across the state.
"Because of the type of offense that he played in in high school, I think that more people are seeing the success that he can play in that offense so it's producing more quarterbacks," said Chastain.
He says Fromm's dedication to the Dawgs in college and consistent faith will serve him well in the NFL.
"As a Georgia fan, you don't want to see him go because he's really good, but as a Jake Fromm fan, I'm proud of him. I'm super-proud of him and I'm glad for him," said Chastain.
On Twitter, Fromm thanked Coach Kirby Smart and the university for giving him the opportunity to play football.
