VERIFY: Is the Saturday before Christmas the busiest shopping day?

Sabrina Burse spoke to some shoppers in Houston County and checked with the National Retail Federation.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — The last weekend before Christmas is just days away, and some people might still have shopping to do.

How many people are in the same boat?

Sabrina Burse set out to verify if the most shoppers will get out on Saturday. Her source is the National Retail Federation.

Tammy Chastain is ready to deck the halls and knock out some Christmas shopping with her husband.

"He likes to do the last minute, get out there. He likes the crowds, he likes the fun, he likes the excitement," said Chastain.

She says he'll even join the chaos on Christmas Eve. It's something she tries to steer clear of.

"I did most of mine online this year just to avoid the crowds," said Chastain.

Shopper Michael Simeton says he's making a list and checking it twice for his eight children. He says buying gifts for all of them in timely manner can be quite the task.

So when is the busiest shopping day of the year?

"Most of them probably run out on Christmas Eve," said Chastain.

Simeton says he thinks Saturday will take the lead.

"That's when most people have day off. Sunday, maybe," said Simeton.

The National Retail Federation is the largest retail trade association. They say Saturday is right with nearly 148 million Americans planning to holiday shop.

That's up from 134.3 million in 2019.

The federation says about 137 million people were expected to shop the entire Thanksgiving weekend.

The Saturday before Christmas has coined the name "Super Saturday."

So we verified that the last Saturday before Christmas has become the busiest shopping day of the year.

Simeton says he plans to hit the stores sooner rather than later so he can guarantee he has the gifts he needs under the tree for family.

"Make them happy, man -- put a smile on their face, you know?" said Simeton.

The National Retail Federation says the number of people shopping on "Super Saturday" includes both in-store and online activity.

The federation also says 56 percent of holiday shoppers plan to purchase their last gift during the week before Christmas. It says 62 percent are expected to shop on Saturday.
