Roberta Police Department helps Crawford High cheerleaders raise money for cheer camp

The Eagles reached their fundraising goal thanks to a donation made by the Roberta Police Department

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ga. — Schools out for summer, but the Crawford County's cheer team was up early Sunday morning for practice.

"We have a routine that we go through every day, and throughout the year, it gets more and more difficult because we keep adding stuff," Senior Yuki Smith said.

She's one of the 28 girls on the team who are preparing for cheer camp under Coach Cynthia Dickey.

"They work extremely hard. When other people are in the bed, they're up here practicing. They practice early in the morning or they'll practice late in the afternoon," Dickey said.

Outside of practice, they work to raise money to go to their annual cheer camp at the end of June.

"We've now done 11 fundraisers to go to camp for all of us," Smith said.

"It's just a lot of fun to be around people, and learning new things like stunts and cheers and just learning how to be better," Junior Alana Miller said.

The Roberta Police Department caught word that the team was having a car wash and doughnut fundraiser and decided to help.

"I got a phone call on Saturday morning saying the girls were having a car wash, and I'd like to get my new patrol car washed, and I said, 'Absolutely,' and they were taking donations and showed up, got a cup of coffee, girls washed my car, and now we're here," Mark Donovan with the Patrol Division said.

"Camp costs about $10,000. We're going to Great Wolf Lodge -- it's a nice camp," Dickey said.

"We donated $100 from the police department besides what the officers did on their own with having their cars washed," Police Chief Ty Matthews said.

Law enforcement helped the team reach their goal to raise enough for camp and new uniforms.

"Without them and without the community, we couldn't do things because they're very supportive," Dickey said.

"It feels great to know that we have people to support us and to have our backs," Miller said.

"This is a very positive thing for this high school, for this community, and it's great to know that these girls get to achieve their goals," Matthews said.

The girls will head to Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange for cheer camp, which goes from June 25th-28th.
