MACON, Ga. — Robins Air Force Base officially cut the ribbon on their new software lab in downtown Macon. The Blue Sky Lab is named after the Allman Brothers song.
Blue Sky sits on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Poplar Street, neighboring the new-and-improved Capricorn Records.
With the unveiling of the lab, the base will also bringing 50 new technology-oriented jobs to Macon.
"The most exciting thing that this will bring in the future is innovation and creative spirit," says Warner Robins Air Logistics Complex commander, Brig. Gen. John Kubinec. "It's one of the reasons we wanted to be in downtown Macon. We wanted to get on the cutting edge of what we do in software development and innovation."
Robins Air Force Base collaborated with Macon-Bibb County government and Mercer University to make the lab a reality. Construction began in October of 2019.
NewTown Macon and Macon-Bibb's Industrial and Urban Development Authorities were also involved.
Engineers started working in the lab on Monday. According to the base, they will begin working on seven software development projects.
The lab is one more step to connect Robins Air Force Base with the surrounding Central Georgia community.
