MACON, Ga. — A Wesleyan cross country athlete is dead, according to Coroner Leon Jones.
Jones said that athlete Nefertari Holston, 23, collapsed and went under cardiac arrest during a meet Saturday morning. It was reportedly at Middle Georgia State.
He said that Holston was brought to Atrium Health Nacivent, where she was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. Next of kin has been informed.
"The entire Wesleyan Community is deeply saddened by the death of one of our students," Wesleyan College spokesperson Drew Davidson said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time. This student has been a vibrant part of our campus, and this loss will no doubt impact us all. We are providing counseling services to our students, and we encourage anyone to reach out. We ask you to respect our students and our community’s privacy as we grieve and come to terms with this loss.”
Jones said that her body would be brought to the GBI Crime Lab on Monday for an autopsy.
