MACON, Ga. — A 19-year-old man was found shot to death inside an abandoned home at 4458 Pinedale Dr., according to a press release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office says they received the call around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Bibb County Deputy Coroner Luann Stone says they're ruling it a homicide.
"Because of the way the scene was with the shell casings and the multiple gunshots, and the position - just where he was at and the crime scene itself - you could tell that it was not a suicide," Stone said.
When deputies arrived at the 4400 block of Pinedale Drive, they say DeMario Markell Jackson was found inside the abandoned home suffering a gunshot wound.
Stone said the property manager requested an assessment of the yard. Wednesday morning while visiting the house, the assessor discovered Jackson's body.
"They noticed the carport door was open and was standing open and they stepped there to the door and found the decedent laying on the floor right inside the door of the house," Stone said.
The coroner's office arrived on the scene and pronounced Jackson dead, the press release said.
The sheriff's office says the circumstances of Jackson's death are currently under investigation, and the press release did not offer any information about how long Jackson had been dead in the home or why he was shot in the first place.
"Neighbors said they heard him between 3:00 and 3:30, whether he actually passed away at that moment or, and they left and he passed away later, all that can be determined once he has the autopsy," Stone said. "They did find shell casings inside the house and outside the house."
Stone could not confirm with 13WMAZ if the casings found outside the home are related to Jackson's death.
The sheriff's office says his death is currently under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 478-751-7500 or the Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
13WMAZ has sent a crew to the scene to hopefully learn more information. This is a developing story. We'll provide more information when it becomes available.
