GLENNVILLE, Ga. — New details are available from the Georgia Department of Corrections after an employee was shot by an inmate on Sunday.
The department discovered Aramark employee, Aureon Grace, and the inmate, Jaydrekus Hart, had a personal relationship before Hart shot her, an email from the department said.
They also found a suicide note they believe Hart wrote.
The department said in their email this was an isolated situation, although the investigation will remain open.
On Sunday, Hart shot and killed Grace while she was working in the kitchen, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
They say it happened around 4:40 a.m. Grace was later pronounced dead.
Hart shot himself. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.
The weapon used is in being held by the GDC, and they are investigating what led up to the shooting. They say they're trying to determine how Hart got the weapon behind bars.
GDC Special Agents are responding and are providing staffing support to the facility.
Hart was serving 20 years for voluntary manslaughter out of Carroll County. He had a maximum release date of June 2043.
