GLENNVILLE, Ga. — An inmate and a Smith State Prison employee are dead after a shooting on Sunday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC).
They say around 4:40 a.m. inmate Jaydrekus Hart shot an Aramark food service employee while working in the kitchen.
The employee was later pronounced dead.
Hart then shot himself and was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The weapon used is in GDC custody and they are investigating what led up to the shooting.
GDC Special Agents are responding and are providing staffing support to the facility.
Hart was serving 20 years for voluntary manslaughter out of Carroll County. He had a maximum release date of June 2043.
The GDC said they will provide more updates as more details are confirmed.
