'Nothing is the same' | Telfair County residents are still without power

Some families in Telfair County say they haven't had power in 12 days.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Ga. — Some people in Telfair County are still suffering after Hurricane Helene struck more than a week ago.

“We lost power on day one of the storm, and we still have not gotten power yet,” Bre Simmons said.

Vivian Dober said although Helene didn't damage her house, it still left her without power, which is putting a strain on her family.

“We're making it through, but it's really been hard for me,” Dober said.

Dober says her family is in a cramped living situation because they only have one generator.

“It's just a complete opposite of what we do every day. You know? I mean, it's just nothing is the same. Your sleeping arrangements were hot because it's been hot, extremely hot,” Dober said.

Simmons and her family are sleeping at her husband's place of work, the McRae-Helena fire station. She says the station has a generator, but their 5-month-old child still gets hot and frustrated due to the change.

“We're very fortunate, for this opportunity that we do have,” Simmons said.

Simmons says the community has been a big help, giving them food and other necessities.

“Miss Bonnie, she did give us thousands of dollars' worth of food to help feed all of the people,” Simmons said.

The family says the station is giving out food, drinks and other essentials to those still recovering from the storm. It's located at 718 Forsyth Avenue in McRae-Helena.

According to the US Power Outage Map, more than 40,000 people in Georgia are still without power.
