Suspicious package clears downtown Macon building

The package was delivered to the office of the U.S. attorney, but it turned out to be harmless.

MACON, Ga. — The Macon U.S. Attorney's office was evacuated for about 80 minutes Friday afternoon due to a suspicious package.

It happened around 2 p.m. at the Gateway Plaza office building at 300 Mulberry Street.

According to a news release for U.S. Attorney Charles Peeler, the package was delivered to the federal prosecutors' office on the second floor.

People in the office suspected that the package contained a powdery substance and notified authorities.

The Macon-Bibb fire department and sheriff's office and their bomb squad and hazmat team all responded, but they determined the package was harmless.

It was turned over to the fire department.

Staff returned to the office around 3:20 p.m., according to Peeler.
