School of the Week: Dublin High School construction & theater classes honor national arts in education week in collaboration

Students are putting the pieces of their props together for their upcoming play: “Our Place.”

DUBLIN, Ga. — In a collaboration, students in the theater program and construction classes at Dublin High School are putting their heads together for a major project.

This week, they started constructing the props for a six-scene play, “Our Place.”

About a dozen theater students are in the cast, in addition to the student technicians helping out with production and crew members putting together props.

They’re building what’s called “the dock,” instructor Jeremy Ellenberg said.

It’s the one constant in the play, his students explained. Variables, like the characters in the scene and time the scene is set in, change but the dock is in every scene.

“Our stage doesn't look like a dock, so we're making platforms, and we're going to paint it to look like a dock,” cast and crew member Wyatt Patisaul said.

With pieces of wood, the construction is lending hands and tools to help create the set.

Patisaul said he likes getting to engage in all parts of the production because of the different perspectives he gets to see.

“I’m used to sitting in the crowd watching the full production. now that i'm actually in drama i get to see everything behind the scenes and how it all comes together,” Patisaul said.

Ellenberg is leading his theater troupe and Michael Shepard is the head of the construction class.

“When they need help with sets, he can bring them in, and that also gives them the opprtuntity to see the construction classroom and give them an idea,” Shepard said. “They may be interested in learning some of the skills.”

Shepard explained he enjoys not only teaching the students a trade skill some haven’t ever been exposed to, but thinks it’s a valuable opportunity for students to engage with ahead of deciding their future careers.

They’re still putting the pieces together and practicing their parts.

“Our Place” is happening Oct. 23 at the Dublin High School Auditorium.
