MACON, Ga. — Many Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School students were shocked to walk through the halls and see their school transformed for the holidays.
"You want to come to a place where you feel like you're supported and loved," says principal Tawanya Wilson.
Wilson says she and the teachers want to provide that for students at the school. Students can walk through the halls and feel what the holidays are like in New York City.
"We have New York period. We have the skyscrapers, The Statue of Liberty and the ferry that goes out to the statue," explained Wilson.
The Manhattan Bridge and, of course, plenty of holiday lights are on display. Sharvis Canty, a kindergarten teacher, says the faculty and staff were all dedicated to bringing the holidays to their students.
"The time frame it took us to complete the holiday decorations was over the span of 3 weeks. It took anywhere from 2 to 3 hours after school daily," says Canty.
"Some of them have said they don't have Christmas trees at home because they can't afford it. That's one of the reasons why I wanted to expose this to the students, so they can see what Christmas can feel like," says Wilson.
