MACON, Ga. — Many high schoolers find that getting ready to move on in the next chapter of their life can be confusing, especially when you're working on making the grade.
Especially while thinking about how you'll get paid in a future career.
It's something G'nya Ates finds herself wondering about.
"I have thought about nursing, law school and cloud engineering," says Ates.
Through the Mount de Sales Senior Practicum Program, she's getting to shadow professionals in the nursing and law fields.
"I feel like this will be a good chance for me to see actually experience and see how I will feel actually in the career," explained Ates.
"They get to see what that day to day routine is like with those professionals. They get to experience that before they go to college and spend a lot of time and money focusing on that career, then realizing that's not what they want to do," says Sarah Corum, math teacher and Senior Practicum Coordinator.
Corum says the program starts in the spring of their junior year.
"Over the summer they find mentors and start a blog. At the end of their senior year they have a presentation," says Corum.
By the end of senior year, students will spend at least 25 hours shadowing professionals. Last year, a student spent 67 hours shadowing. Some students shadow 2 professionals - like Ates, who's shadowing a nurse this semester and a lawyer the next.
"I want to get a feel of all of it, so I can decide," says Ates.
