A Sandersville man was walking to his apartment just before midnight. Then, police say he was shot

Sandersville Police Investigator Ken Parker said it happened just before midnight on Wednesday.

SANDERSVILLE, Ga. — The Sandersville Police Department is investigating after a man was shot in the lower leg in an apparent "ambush," Sandersville Police Investigator Ken Parker said.

Parker says it happened just before midnight on Wednesday on East Church Street.

A man was walking towards his unit at the Sun Rise Apartments when Parker says a man stepped out of a car and opened fire.

The man was taken by helicopter to Augusta where he is expected to survive.

It's the second busy Thanksgiving holiday in a row for Washington County law enforcement after a shooting last year left a man dead.

It happened in the early hours of Thanksgiving at the 478 Loft Event Center on Highway 15, leaving Thomas Womble, Jr., age 42, of Sparta dead.

In this year's shooting, Parker says that there is a person of interest in the man's shooting and he believes they'll make an arrest soon.
