Man arrested in shooting death of Micah McCant in Fort Valley, police chief says

Chief of Police DJ Flores says McCant was shot while picking up his daughter at a middle school graduation party.

MACON, Ga. — A man was arrested on Wednesday in the shooting death of 31-year-old Micah McCant at a middle school graduation party in Fort Valley, according to Police Chief DJ Flores.

Flores says they encountered the suspect, 36-year-old Dexter Oliver of Fort Valley, on Vienna Circle. Authorities then stopped Oliver and arrested him on a murder charge, Flores said.

McCant and another person were shot on Sunday at around 10 p.m. while he was picking up his daughter at a graduation party. McCant died later that night at the hospital, Flores said.

It all started at an apartment called the Royal Town Homes. At this time, the Fort Valley Police Department believes there was a middle school graduation party happening, but the crowd there would soon grow to around 30 people.

"Some other teenagers showed up uninvited and that ensued into a fight, a physical fight," Flores previously told 13WMAZ

Flores said that there were 10 adults when the fight started. He believes it started with the parents of some juveniles getting into a fight, and then, shots rang out.

Two people were shot, including Flores.

Flores says they are conducting a search of Oliver's grandmother's home, which is where they believe Oliver lives.

The investigation is ongoing, but Flores said they had probable cause to apprehend Oliver.

"We're just going to continue to investigate," Flores said. "If anyone has any information about the murder of Micah McCant, please contact the Fort Valley Police Department."
