FORT VALLEY, Ga. — A fire at a Fort Valley apartment complex has left 21 people out of a place to live Sunday afternoon, according to a press release from the Red Cross.
They say it happened at the Lakeview Apartments on Edwards Street, and now, the Red Cross says they are trying to help. In total, the Red Cross says eight families were displaced.
The fire took place at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, the Fort Valley Fire Department says.
Fire Chief Antonio Woodard said four of those eight units have smoke and water damage. He said both Fort Valley Fire Department and Peach County Fire Department responded.
He said there was heavy smoke and blazing flames when they arrived at the scene.
Woodard said no one was hurt in the fire. He says gas and power services were cut and have not been restored.
He said it took several hours to put out the fire, but they had to return twice Monday morning after the fire flared up again.
Families at the apartment complex note that the fire happened at a bad time since Peach County Schools start their school year on Tuesday.
The Red Cross offered comfort kits, direct client assistance and helped residents plan their path forward, the press release said.
