Ocmulgee Mounds National Parks hosts 32nd annual Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration

The Muscogee, Cherokee, Choctaw and Seminole tribes were some of the many Southeastern tribes represented at the event

MACON, Ga. — Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is hosting its 32nd annual Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration on Saturday and Sunday.

The celebration looks to celebrate all Southeastern Native American cultures and heritages. Daniel Isaac, a member of Mississippi Band of Choctaw, also said they wish to teach attendees about Muscogee Culture.

The celebration will have traditional cultural dances, storytelling, live demonstrations, music and art from Native American tribes. There were also plenty of activities for kids like pottery making and face painting.

The National Parks Service and the Ocmulgee Mounds Association teamed up with the Muscogee (Creek) nation and several other tribes to put on the celebration.

Alongside the Native American art, classic Native American food will also be served. On Saturday, there were half a dozen food trucks and concession stands alongside over a dozen merchandise vendors.

On Sunday, the tribes will have a Honoring of Veterans ceremony to honor the Muscogee veterans who have died. Tribes like the Muscogee, Cherokee, Choctaw and Seminole tribes will all perform.

On Saturday, the tribes demonstrated games like stick ball, which is a very popular game for the Muscogee and Native Americans. They also had speeches on Muscogee Creek history and another on misconceptions and misrepresentations about Native Americans that are shown in movies and popular media.

The event was free to anyone that wanted to come out and will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
