Boil water advisory in place for Forsyth after water main break

The city says it will notify people when the advisory is lifted.

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — Multiple office buildings in Monroe County are closed and a boil water advisory is in place on Monday after a water main break, according to a Facebook post from the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.

Buildings that are closed include the Administration Building, Courthouse, Senior Center, Head Start, Extension Office, Workforce Development, Health Department, Water Department, Animal Services, and the Library.

The County Commissioners building is also closed but Planning and Zoning will still hold the public hearing on Monday at 5:30 p.m. However, no restrooms or sinks will be available if the water line is still broken at the time.

Employees in these offices will be working from home until the issue is resolved.

Monroe County's first responders remain on duty, as always, to assist citizens in case of emergency.

Early Monday, the city reported a 12-inch water main break on Willis Wilder Drive.

They said some residents will experience low water pressure and a possible loss of service.

The water department is onsite working to isolate the break and make repairs. They said this could be a lengthy process.

The City of Forsyth issued a boil water advisory for the city, especially for the northwest and southwest parts of the city.

They say the advisory is being issued "out of an abundance of caution." A health hazard may exist because of microbial contamination in these areas without positive pressure.

People affected by the water outage are advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking, cooking or preparing food.

To properly boil tap water for use, customers should:

  • Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container.
  • Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil.
  • Remove the water from the heat source and allow to cool before use.

During a Boil Water Advisory, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for the following:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  •  Washing food and preparing food and baby formula
  • Making ice
  • Drinking water for pets

Other activities such as washing clothes, dishwashing and other uses can be done without boiling tap water if done properly.  You can find out more on the CDC's website.

The city says it will notify people when the advisory is lifted. Once the advisory is lifted you should flush all faucets for a minimum of two minutes before using them for drinking or food preparation.
